How to use a Gate with a sidechain as a trigger (explained in FL Studio)

When it comes to sidechains, I think most people think of compression.

But sidechaining can be used for more than just comps.

It's based on FL Studio, but the idea is the same for other DAWs.

The Gate plugin needs to support sidechaining, but the free Kilohearts EssentialsGateis compatible with sidechaining, so anyone can reproduce it.

Advantages of using Gate with sidechains

The advantage of Gate using sidechain is that it allows Gate processing to react to the volume of other input sources.

Zynaptiq's the other dayMORPH 2 Sale ArticlesWhen I wrote (sale ends on 10/2), I used a Gate that uses a sidechain.

Below is a case where Gate is not used in the sidechain for MORPH 2.

Here is when I used it.

MORPH 2 morphs between two inputs, but the main source is swapped in the middle of the XY pad.

If you go to the left side, the synth is the main part in the above video, so the synth sounds like noise.

In order to catch this noise part with the Gate, the vocal is put in from the side chain of the Gate, and when the vocal volume exceeds a certain amount, the Gate opens, and when the vocal volume falls below a certain amount, the Gate closes. It will be an example of the video of.

I will explain how to set it up.

FL Studio settings

I will explain using Mixer 1, Mixer 2, and Mixer 3.

The mixer assignments are as follows.

Vocals: Mixer 3
Synth: Mixer 2

Use effect

Add effects to each mixer.

Mixer 1: MORPH SC
Mixer 2: kHs Gate

Routing settings

Routing is done with “Mixer 2” and “Mixer 3”.

mixer 2

“Mixer 2” feeds into the sidechain of “Mixer 1”.

The way is to select "Mixer 2", right click on "Mixer 1" and select "Sidechain to this track".

And to cut the routing to "Master", click the ▲ part of the master.

mixer 3

"Mixer 3" sends to "Mixer 1" and branches to enter the sidechain of "Mixer 2".

First, route "Mixer 3" directly to "Mixer 1".

To do this, select “Mixer 3” and click ▲ next to “Mixer 1”.

With "Mixer 3" selected, right click on "Mixer 2" and select "Sidechain to this track".

Finally, to cut the routing to "Master", click the ▲ part of the master.

Routing is now complete.

Configuring Kilohearts Essentials Gate

Enable sidechain input in "Kilohearts Essentials Gate".

From the gear icon, set "2.Aux#1" on the "Processing" tab to "1".

Next, select "INPUT 3+4" from the "Sidechain" drop-down list.
(Your number may be different)

This completes the settings.

Although it is an applied usage, you can also do the following by inverting the input of the Gate.

To make it easier to understand, the synth is sounding, but if you put the wet sound of Reverb and Delay instead of the synth, you can increase the Reverb and Delay when the volume of the vocal is low.

Summary

It can be a little cumbersome at first, but it's easy once you get used to it.

It is possible to make it with Patcher, but you need to prepare the routing before loading Patcher.

HoweverKilohearts EssentialsIt's too wonderful.
