Overview

The Doepfer A-114 ring modulator contains two independent ring modulators. Each ring modulator is the product of the signals at inputs X and Y (multiplication X * Y). Works like a VCA, but responds to both positive and negative voltages (2 quadrant multiplication). Therefore, the ring modulator can be described as a version of amplitude modulation (AM).If normal amplitude modulation outputs the original carrier frequency fC and two sidebands (fC-fM, fC + fM), ring modulation cancels the carrier frequency and allows the sideband to pass through the output. The emulation of the A-4 Ring Modulator included in the Softube Modular reflects slight variations in the original hardware of the trimming between the top and bottom channels. The top channel, like the bottom channel, does not completely suppress the X component from the X * Y output. The distortion model is slightly different between the two to reflect the measured hardware behavior.

How to use Doepfer A-114 Ring Modulator

For the time being, I think it's a good idea to put anything in the input.

Simply add two sine waves and change the Tune a little to get a swell-like sound.

This isn't enough, so I added a flanger and Gross Beat.

Slicing the sound made with this seems to be interesting again.

You can play with eternity w

Summary of explanation of Doepfer A-114 Ring Modulator

It's sober, but if you add a lot of effects, you'll get sounds with frequencies that you wouldn't normally hear, making it an attractive sound.

It was a little despised, but it was a fairly usable module.

Various trial and error is required.
