Chowdury DSP's new plugin has been released.

This time, it is a Kick sound source that models the 808 Kick.

You can control the pitch with MIDI notes, but I think it's a little difficult to make sounds.

In this article, I will send you the following contents.

・ Overview of ChowKick
・ How to download ChowKick
・ ChowKick parameter explanation
・ Easy to use ChowKick

Overview of Chow Kick

Chow Kick is a kick drum synthesizer made by physically modeling the circuits of an old drum machine. In addition to the highly parameterizable pulse shaper, the resonant filter with several non-linear modes offers a wide range of possibilities for sound designers. The kick drum can also be easily "tuned" by entering MIDI notes to the keys of the song.

Apple Silicon is still under test and if you want to try itNightly buildsYou can also try the latest test version with.

How to download Chow Kick

Go to the link below and download the installer for the relevant OS.

Free up to the IOS version is amazing.
(Since it was written as in-app purchase, you can use all the functions normally just by donating as a tip if you look at it)

It's great that the manual is well made even though it's free, and since it's open source, even the source code is open to the public.

Easy to use Chow Kick

I will write it like Tips for those who want to use it quickly.

If you want to know more about the parameters, please refer to the following "ChowKick parameter explanation".

Control the pitch with MIDI

This can be controlled by MIDI by simply checking the "Link" parameter.

However, I think it's difficult to use because the sound varies considerably.

I think that the most pitchy feeling comes out when "Res." Is "Linear".

Applying a strong compression (higher Recio) will increase the sense of pitch.

Match the pitch of Kick to the key of the song

When I wrote the following article beforeSee hereI made it in Excel.
(Easy to understand, rounded off to the nearest whole number)

The point is that you can find the next Hz by multiplying by "1.059463094".

ChowKick can be fine-tuned by holding down the Ctrl key and moving the "Frequency" knob, and you can enter values by double-clicking.

If the music is mainly Kick, it may be better to calculate back from Kick and decide the key.

Adjust the length (release) of the sound

This is difficult to understand, but with the release of "Pulse Shaper", the length of the sound cannot be controlled.

You can adjust the length of the sound using the "Damping" parameter.

Chow Kick parameter explanation

I will explain each parameter with the Japanese translation of the manual and sound.

I wondered what it was because the envelope had a strange shape, but this is Pulse.

I didn't know this, so I learned a lot.

Pulse Shaper

2021 07 11 01h57 45 1

The Pulse Shaper transforms the Pulse to create an envelope.

With

Width controls the width of the generated pulse that triggers the kick drum. The range is from 25 microseconds to 2.5 milliseconds.

Amplitude

Amplitude controls the maximum amplitude of the kick drum triggering pulse of the generated pulse that triggers the kick drum.

Decay

Decay controls how quickly the pulse decays from its maximum amplitude.Internally, it controls the value of resistance R162 in the pulse shaper circuit.

sustain

Sustain controls the sustain level of the pulse.Internally it controls the resistance R163 of this her pulse shaper circuit.

Voices

Voices control the number of polyphonic voices used by the kick synthesizer. This feature is useful for kick sounds with long decay times, so that triggering a new kick will not cut the ringing out of the previous kick.Increasing the number of voices does not affect the CPU usage of the plug-in.

Resonant Filter

2021 07 11 02x40 14

The resonance filter part implements a nonlinear resonance filter with global feedback.

Frequency

Frequency controls the center frequency of the resonant filter and is set in the range of 30Hz to 500Hz.

Link

Link disables frequency control and instead determines the resonance frequency of the kick drum with the plug-in's MIDI note input.

Q

Q controls the quality factor of the filter.

Damping

Damping controls the amount of global feedback around the filter. If the damping value is low, the kick drum decay time will be very long.

Tight

Tight adjusts the non-linear characteristics of the filter so that the resonance of the filter decreases as the signal amplitude increases.
This parameter has the same effect as "tightening" the kick drum sound with a compressor.

Bounce

Adjust the non-linear characteristics of the Bounce filter so that the frequency of the filter increases as the amplitude of the signal increases.
This parameter helps give the kick drum sound an effect like pitch modulation.

Tone

Tone adjusts the output of the kick drum and chooses whether to emphasize or weaken the treble of the drum.

Res.

Res. Mode controls the effect of “tight” and “bounce” on the overall sound.

Summary

You can make quite a variety of types of Kick.

And since Chowdury DSP is a developer who updates properly, I'm looking forward to future development.

It is an emulation of Sony TC-260.Chow Tape ModelHas been updated and brushed up.

You can also download past versions.
