Explanation of GSi's free tape delay emulation VariSpeed

This tape emulation is amazing because it doesn't seem to be free.

However, when I try to use it, I can use it somehow, but I do not understand the clear role of each parameter.

That's why I read the manual and made it a commentary article.

VariSpeed Overview

VariSpeed is a new plugin that GSi offers to everyone for free. This is a simulation of WEM's Copicart IC-400 Belt Drive VariSpeed model, the first tape echo machine from WEM, with a DC capstan motor that can change the speed and change the delay time. increase. GSi VariSpeed has no additional features other than the fact that the hardware device is "as is" and he has all its strengths and weaknesses digitally MIDI controllable. This is a simulation of the freeware “WatKat” released in 2008, “Custom Copicat”, and GSi can be thought of as the second chapter in homage to Charlie Watkins.

Explanation of each parameter

2020 11 15 03x12 33

① Dry Level:Adjust the DIY input signal levels of the left and right channels individually.

② Heads: Switch between the three pickup heads with the green, white, and red buttons.

③ ECHO TONE DEFEAT:Turn this on to enable tone adjustment

④ SWELL:Adjust the output level of Delay

⑤ REPEAT:Adjust the Delay Feedback

⑥ ECHO TONE:Delay output tone High = Dark

This knob is enabled when ③ is On. (Ignored when ③ is Off)

⑦ VARISPEED:This knob changes the motor speed, which changes the delay time

The more you turn it to the right, the smaller (faster) the delay time will be.

Unfortunately, it does not synchronize with BPM etc.

At BPM115, ⑦ is 1/4 on the far left.
However, it is better to use it for feeling rather than thinking about it.

other noteworthy things

There are some descriptions in the manual, so I will post the translation as it is.

Everything is very straightforward. There are some notable points

– This is a simulation of a tape delay made and sold in the 70's.

– Tape produces hum and hiss, but this cannot be disabled.

– (If the feedback is too high) it is prone to self-oscillation, which can distort the sound like a transistor.

– It should also be noted that the actual unit is more aggressive when it comes to noise and distortion ... we have tried to keep it usable.

– Also, keep in mind that a real unit can change its sound and behavior before the tape loop deteriorates and becomes unusable.

– Of course, there is no host tempo sync.

– You will notice that the tape “slides” as the junction passes around the capstan, as all imperfections are simulated, and you will also notice that the tape speed is not stable. ..

– The tone knob works in the opposite direction: turning it clockwise dims the sound.

GSi's free tape delay emulation VariSpeed commentary summary

After all, I read the manual properly.

Various mysteries have been solved.

It's a little difficult to use because it doesn't synchronize with BPM, but I think it's good to rely on your ears to find a pleasant rhythm.

With short feedback, a slight deviation will not necessarily be unpleasant.
