FL Studio 20.8.4 releasedThat's why, I will write a commentary on the newly added effect "Frequency Shifter".

It seems that the effects installed in other DAWs and HALion Sonic are not new.

The mechanism is the other dayNative Instruments FREAK who wrote the articleIs also similar.

Overview of Frequency Shifter

Frequency shifters are a special effect that shifts all frequencies by the same amount. For example, if the shift amount is 100Hz, 400Hz becomes 500Hz and 10,000Hz becomes 10100Hz.This is different from traditional pitch changes made on sampler channels, pitchers, New Tones, etc., as it has the effect of dramatically pitch-shifting low frequencies over high frequencies. These change frequencies in multiples, so a double shift will change 2Hz to 400Hz and 800Hz to 10,000Hz.The characteristic of the frequency shifter is that it converts the input sound into a more dissonant, metallic, or "FM" (Frequency Modulation) sound. In addition, Frequency Shifter has a Ring Modulator mode that is modulated by the sidechain input.

Frequency Shifter parameter explanation

① Freq:Frequency shift or offset (Hz).This is added over the entire frequency spectrum. The display shows the frequency offset in Hz

20kHz / 200Hz:Set the frequency control range to ± 20kHz or 200Hz.

Time: About 7,5 hrs in total, 4,5 hrs to go up and 3 to come downAdjust the frequency in multiples of the tempo.

② Frequency Shifter / HQ:You can choose between standard mode and high quality (HQ) mode.Reduces aliasing noise with a dramatic shift amount. It may not be preferable depending on the purpose.

③ Ring Mod:See Ring Modulation Mode (see below).

④ Sidechain:See Ring Modulation Mode (see below). Not used in frequency shift mode.

⑤ Sideband L / R:Adjusts the sound of Frequency Shifting on the Left Channel. TIP: Set the sideband to maximum, set the mix to 50%, and use slow frequency modulation for an endless phaser style effect.

Link (icon):Link the controls on the left and right sidebands.

⑥ Start Phase:Defines the starting phase of the sinusoidal oscillator.

⑦ L / R Phase:Sets the phase difference between the right and left channel sinusoidal oscillators. The effect appears when the Frequency parameter is 5 Hz or less.

⑧ Feedback:Controls the amount of signal fed back from the output of the frequency shifter to the input. As a result, the signal is increasingly shifted in each feedback round, resulting in significant changes in the frequency spectrum.

⑨ Mix:Comparison of wet (effect) and dry (input signal).

⑩ Stereo:Stereo width.

Ring Modulation Mode

Ring modulation is the doubling of the amplitude (volume) of one audio signal with the amplitude of another audio signal. If the amplitude modulation from the source is slow, it sounds like a tremolo effect, and if it's fast enough, new additional tones are created.

① Sidechain: The sidechain audio input modulates the amplitude (level) of the input signal. This creates unique new frequencies and timbres (intermodulation) if the sidechain signal has the right frequency range and duration. The sidechains available on a Frequency Shifters mixer track are those that are sidechained to that track.

Easy to use Frequency Shifter

I will try to reproduce the sound that was playing in the demo in the video.

First, load the synth.

Anything is fine, but I used "Sytrus" just like the video.

I used the preset "Orbital" in the "Bass" category.

Assign to mixer XNUMX.

Load "Frequency Shifter" into Mixer XNUMX.

You should get the same sound by doing the following.

I will explain the points here.

First, since "TEMPO" is selected, the tempo will be synchronized.

And since it is set to 4, it is the length of a quarter note.

The swell is emphasized by raising "FEEDBACK" a little.

If you change "ST.PAHSE", the start position of the swell will change.

"Side band L / R" can be set separately for left and right, but turning the knob to the right shifts it in the plus direction, and turning it to the left shifts it in the minus direction.

Summary

I tried using the ring modulator in the side chain, but there is not much variation in the sound and it is not interesting.

I think FREAK is better for ring modulation.

Uneri's tempo synchronization may be a feature that other DAWs do not have.
(I can't say anything because it's unconfirmed)

But what does it mean that you can't resize the GUI even though it's so simple?
