Introducing Codec, a Lo-Fi plug-in that degrades lese's sound in various ways

My personal favorite developer.

Today, Lese has released a free Lo-Fi plug-in Codec, so I would like to introduce it.

Mr. Lese is a wonderful place to look at, as expected.

Many developers have released plug-ins that degrade sound quality, but they sound different from others.

the idea itself

It is a lossy audio compression format.opusIt seems to use the algorithm of

This is what it looks like with an electric piano loop.

Overview

Codec

Codecs are for destroying sound.
Unlike other plugins that simulate the 'old' way of degrading records, tapes and cassette tapes, Codec degrades sound in the most common way today with internet compression algorithms!

A Codec is basically a container that houses an audio compressor (not a compressor of its kind), allowing your DAW of choice to compress and decompress sound in real time.

Since Codec is basically just a container, we thought it would make sense to give it away as a VST3 and AU plugin for free, so enjoy.

Codec was born out of a plugin idea we had some time ago.

“What if we could simulate an internet connection glitch?”

We looked around and didn't find much that did what we wanted. There were some plugins that mimicked what this effect sounded like, but they always seemed a little 'off'.

So we came up with another idea. What if we created a plugin that acts as a container around the real thing?I thought.

Codec is built around Opus, the most popular encoder/decoder system today. This is the same algorithm used by Discord and WhatsApp.

packet drop

The Codec can simulate a poor internet connection using a "loss" system (and how "packet loss" is handled).Packets are either lost entirely (an internal algorithm tries to "reconstruct" the sound in real time) or are kept and repeated (to get a super glitchy effect).

Crunch

The crunch section allows you to push the limits of your Codec. After compression and decompression, the gain is removed, keeping the sound the same volume, but allowing more artifacts to be added.

Mode selection

It is also possible to change the internal state of the algorithm.By clicking the Lese logo in the title bar, you can switch between "Voice" mode, "Music" mode, and "Low Latency" mode. Each of these modes reacts slightly differently to incoming sounds.

Before downloading, just one technical note. Keep in mind that Opus has its own limitations, especially latency. Opus can adjust internal latency in algorithm mode and packet loss. This makes adding latency compensation or a dry/wet mixing system to the program impractical.I would appreciate it if you could understand.

Finally, most of the heavy audio processing in this plugin wasn't really made by us, and the Codec is basically just a container for something else, so I'm pretty sure the Codec will be free forever. I decided that it was the only fair.Available now on the product page. Please enjoy.

Since the download link is displayed in "Product", click the link that matches your environment to download it.

If you don't understand well on Windows, download it from the top "Codec – Windows". (Since it comes with an installer, you can finish by running the installer)

Installation

Since there is an installer, you can run the installer and install it by default.

If you chose Codec – Windows (No Install), when you unzip it, "codec.vst3" is included, so if you put it in the following folder, the installation is complete.

C: \ Program Files \ Common Files \ VST3

Additional Information

Just a little additional information.

You can change the mode by clicking the logo on the upper left.

Mode selection is possible from three of "voice", "music", "low latency".

I think that the more severe the deterioration, the more noticeable the difference when selecting the mode.

Summary

It is wonderful.

Personally, Mr. Lese is a very favorite developer.

If there is a sale, I will buy a paid plug-in.
