LittleNot the one.

Primal Tap is a Delay plugin inspired by Lexcon's Prime Time.

I found the video and it looks exactly like that.

I tried playing a little preset.

You can get a pretty good effect just by playing the preset.

Overview

Retro Delay With Freeze

Model a retro dual delay with a "freeze" for pitch-warped loops and delays.

Whether you're looking for an 80's-style studio delay, or a performance tool that gives you a stunning sound just by tweaking a knob, Primal Tap is a must-see.

PrimalTap emulates and reconstructs the unique sound and features of Prime Time Delay, a classic digital delay with powerful performance and sound design capabilities.Like the original hardware, PrimalTap is a hybrid sound of digital and analog, with amazing grit, vibes and character for a digital delay. Also, like Soundtoys, we have evolved the unique functions of the original hardware and pursued more creative possibilities.

Multiply

PrimalTap's Multiply control doubles the delay time and halves the sample rate each time you turn the rotary switch. This is an emulation of the old Prime Time unit. In the early 2's, the memory required for delay circuits was very expensive, so designers devised a way to choose longer delay times at the expense of sound quality.

However, this limitation eventually became one of the greatest creativity of this effect. If you're looking for a lo-fi, hard echo, or something more unconventional, you can turn a knob or make it automatic while playing audio to create a truly unusual pitch jump. Combined with PrimalTap's VCO modulation, you can create a very wild sound.

Modulate

Like the original hardware, the Primal Tap also has a VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) section that allows you to add variation and motion to the echo. The VCO section allows you to add variation and movement to the echo. You can use this section to create rich chorus effects, tape-like flanges, slowly pitch-changing echoes, and more. Great for recreating 80's guitar sounds or creating wilder, more erratic modulations.Unlike the original, PrimalTap's Rate control allows you to raise the VCO to the audio frequency band, so you can even create robot-like ring modulation effects.

You can also use the Adjust knob to manually sweep the VCO section, distorting the delay signal smoothly and glitch-free. Adjust the Rate and Adjust controls to quickly create a sci-fi-like wobbling sound.Of course, you can also record in your favorite DAW or draw automation to capture and tweak these weird modulation effects.By automating, Primal Tap really comes alive.

Freeze

Are you ready to step into even more bizarre areas? You can cut out part of the input audio by tapping the "Freeze" button. The most basic Freeze feature allows you to synchronize the audio to tempo or loop it to any length. But when you start adjusting the time, freeze, and VCO settings, the real madness begins. You can quickly distort or modulate audio fragments to create strange and beautiful soundscapes.

Turn the time knob to create a Zipangu sweep. If you adjust the VCO control, you can also fire a raygun in rapid succession. You can also dive bomb to a lower octave with the Multiply knob. Freeze can give you a truly different world sound by experimenting with other PrimalTap controls.

History

Launched in 1978, the first Prime Time was loved by creative sound pioneers such as Daniel Lanois (who still loves Prime Time), Brian Eno, David Byrne, Pat Metheny and Peter Gabriel. it was done.Other creators used it as an instrument by manipulating knobs and buttons while processing live audio.

The unusual lo-fi and pitch glitch effects were literally a kind at the time. It has a 128ms delay and can optionally be upgraded to 256ms (at a considerable cost).Over time, as with many classical audio equipment, limits and imperfections can create characters that people love. In the case of Prime Time, RAM was expensive, so engineers came up with a multiplication feature that increased the delay time at the expense of sound quality, trying to get the maximum from the minimum. It was Primal Tap that took advantage of that limit, and that sound was the driving force behind Primal Tap.

A New Direction

The Primal Tap is a faithful reproduction of the original Prime Time, but new features and improvements were inevitable to bring this classic back to the 21st century.

Input drive

In addition, if you can't master this feature, you can't call it Soundtoys, so you can add an amount of "IN" to get the sound of a hard push on older hardware. This is a very unique breakup saturation that can be used to make subtle changes or even bolder sounds. Both are our favorite elements.

Sync to host

By locking according to the tempo of the DAW, you can tame the beast. If you want, you can make the delay runaway. The two delay lines can be synchronized to the note value or set in milliseconds, giving you a lot of freedom.

Host automation

Automate your PrimalTap knobs with your favorite DAW for a stunning sound.Whether you're recording crazy knob movements or drawing them directly to your host, automation maximizes the creative potential of this effect.

Upgraded memory

Originally limited to a delay time of 128ms, Primal Tap has achieved a relatively large delay time of up to 2500ms.You can apply longer echoes or use the freeze feature to sample and loop up to 2.5 seconds of audio.

Extended VCO

PrimalTap's VCO shape was originally one type, but PrimalTap allows four types of modulation. In addition, the VCO rate can be much higher than the original and can be moved to the audio range for ring modulation effects. In addition, the VCO depth of each of the two delay taps can be controlled independently and the phases of each can be inverted to move the modulation in two different directions.

New feedback algorithm

The PrimalTap Feedback section offers four new feedback types not found in the original.Parallel and series modes, ping-pong mode for creative stereo effects, and a special reverb mode that specializes in rich wash echoes.

Ken's Spin

"I'm always looking for quirky equipment with a unique personality and atmosphere. I recently watched Daniel Lanois live mixing with Black Dub on YouTube. Prime Time It was very interesting and inspiring to see the H3000 and Prime Time being mixed in real time, such as using the hold button to capture the ambient loop and using the Multiply knob to shift the octave. I was happy with this and immediately took the Prime Time delay out of the collection. The face burst instantly. It was so weird, cool and musical that I was next. I'm sure it's something to work on. It took months of work to give this plug-in the same level of rigor, personality, and musicality, but I'm sure it paid off. Now I like it the most among the Soundtoys plug-ins. "

Ken Bogdanowicz, CEO and lead designer of Soundtoys.
