This is insanely cheap.

It comes bundled with 3 plugins for about $1 each.

This is really recommended.

Features

"1176 Classic Limiter Collection" is plug-in of the following three revisions by the head family (Universal Audio).

・1176 Rev A (Bluestripe)
・1176 Rev E (Blackface)
・1176 AE (1176 40th Anniversary Edition)

I also asked ChatGPT.

Rev. A (early model):

  • distinctive sound: Rev. A is an early model of the 1967 first introduced in 1176.It features bright and edgy high-end and aggressive compression characteristics.Transient processing is outstanding, and it is suitable for material such as percussion and vocals.
  • Rapid attack and release: It features relatively fast attack and release times in the “Attack” and “Release” settings. This characteristic allows quick dynamics control.

Rev. E (Transparent sound):

  • Extended frequency band: Rev. E is the third revision of the 1176, inheriting the characteristics of the Rev. D while offering more transparent compression and an extended frequency range. It has improved high-end and low-end extension, making it suitable for a wide range of musical styles.
  • musical characteristics: Rev. E features a richer midrange and smoother handling of transients. The sound is warmer and more musical, especially for vocals and instrument dynamics control.

1176AE (40th Anniversary Edition):

  • Blend of Revision E traits and modern refinements: The 1176AE is based on the 1176 revision E, but also incorporates some modern improvements. As a result, it offers transparent compression and an extended frequency range, while still meeting the needs of modern music production.
  • Exclusive design and limited production: The 1176 40th Anniversary Edition has a special exterior design and is produced in limited quantities. An attractive collector's item and a celebration of the 1176's classic analog sound.

Based on these characteristics, Rev. A, Rev. E and 1176AE each offer different sound characteristics and advantages. When choosing the best model from the options, it is important to consider your music production needs and preferences.

I will explain the contents of the manual.

1176 Rev A (Bluestripe)

2023 08 29 23x08 46

This model represents the original Putnam FET limiter design with higher distortion and unique FET gain amplifier characteristics. All Limiter Collection bundle models can experience input clipping even without gain reduction, but the Rev A model has the most noticeable input clipping.

The 1176Rev A is an early model.

It is possible to turn off all three compressors and pass only the preamplifier.

It was this 1176 Rev A that changed the most.

Increasing the INPUT will make the highs and lows stronger.

I took a video of the frequency characteristics with PluginDoctor. (no sound)

When the compression is turned on, the attack is the slowest, and the release is the fastest, resulting in a slightly raised high and low.

Increasing the RATIO, speeding up the attack, or slowing down the release will smooth out the frequency response.

However, when all are pressed, the frequency characteristics are much closer to those of the preamp alone.

I also prepared a video for this.

1176 Rev E (Blackface)

It covers the Brad Plunkett "LN" (Low Noise) era of the early 70's, with more linear compression response, transistor gain amplifier characteristics, and more.Variations include more linear compression response, transistor gain amplification, and program dependent changes.

I also made a video of the frequency characteristics of the 1176Rev E.

First, let's look at the frequency characteristics of the preamplifier only.

It looks quiet at first glance, but old lows and highs appear around the memory of INPUT 12.

I took a video of the frequency characteristics with PluginDoctor. (no sound)

The 1176Rev E also has a smoother frequency response when the compressor is turned on, but the low and high remain as they are from the 1176Rev A.
(Of course, when INPUT cuts off the scale of 12, it becomes quite gentle)

1176 AE (1176 40th Anniversary Edition)

The 1176AE offers UA's rare 1176 40th Anniversary Edition. It has its own modifications, such as lowering the compression ratio to 2:1.

The 1176AE was released in 2008, with 500 units worldwide, of which 80 were allocated to Japan.

The 1176 AE has a lower INPUT than the other two models when the INPUT is at scale 24.

Among the 3 revisions, the change in frequency characteristics when the compressor is applied is the least.

First, I tried playing only the preamp section.

Next, press all the ratios.

Main parameters

It's basically the same parameters as a regular comp, except it doesn't have a threshold.

However, you need to be careful that the attack and release parameters are the opposite of the normal parameters.

INPUT

2023 08 30 04x55 34

Input adjusts the amount of gain reduction as well as the relative threshold.Turning the knob clockwise increases the amount of compression. The knobs are not calibrated to a specific dB value and levels will vary with different plugin models. Even with the Input knob set to "∞", the signal will pass through the processor and be compressed.

The 1178 doesn't have a threshold parameter normally found on compressors.

It's a fixed threshold, so adjust the INPUT to determine how far into the threshold.

You can also adjust the HR (headroom).

HR (Headroom)

2023 08 30 04x25 51

Headroom adjusts the plug-in's internal operating reference level so that the plug-in is not pushed “too much” into the gain reduction.Headroom allows for best practice operating level matching and can also be used creatively to extend the sound range of the processor.

By changing the headroom, you can adjust the amount of preamp distortion and compression.

Turn HR to the right especially if you want the frequency response of the preamp section to be noticeable even when compression is applied.

mix

2023 08 30 04h25 51 1

The blended output balance between the plug-in processed signal and the original dry source signal can be adjusted with the Mix control. Mix facilitates parallel compression techniques without creating additional routing in your DAW.

Wet and dry output can be adjusted

If you apply a lot of compression and add a little wet, you can add compression or preamp distortion with little change in dynamics.

Attack

2023 08 30 04h44 57 2

Attack sets the time it takes for the 1176 to react to the input signal and start gain reduction.Start gain reduction. The 1176's attack time is adjustable from 20 microseconds to 800 microseconds.Microseconds (both very fast).Attack time is fastest when the Attack knob is fully clockwise, and slowest when the knob is fully clockwise.is the slowest. If you choose a fast attack time, the gain reduction kicks in almost instantly, catching very short transient signals. It "softens" the sound by catching transient signals of very short duration and reducing their level.A slower attack time lets transients (or partial transients) through before starting to limit or compress the rest of the signal.pass through.Actual Attack Time Actual attack time will vary slightly depending on the ratio selected and the plug-in model used.maintains the fastest attack time. The Attack knob works slightly differently depending on the model. The 1176AE offers a unique “SLO” attack mode with a fixed 10ms when this control is moved to the counter-clockwise position.

UA 1176 Rev A and UA 1176LN Rev E Attack When Attack is in the OFF position, the I/O amplifier remains active and the compression circuitry is bypassed. This allows these models to add 1176 colors without dynamics processing. This function is the same as unlocking all Ratio buttons.

Note that memory 7 is the fastest attack.

Very fast with a minimum of 20 microseconds.
(1msec is 1000 microseconds)

Release

2023 08 30 04h44 57 3

Release sets the time it takes for the 1176 to return to its initial (before gain reduction) level.Set the time to return to The 1176's release time is adjustable from 50 ms to 1100 ms (1.1 seconds).Adjustable down to milliseconds (1.1 seconds).Actual release times will vary slightly depending on the plug-in model used.It also depends, in part, on the program material. The release time is the fastest when the release knob is fully clockwise and the slowest when the knob is fully clockwise.is the slowest.A fast release time can cause an artifact called “pumping” or “breathing” due to the rapid rise. This is because theOn the other hand, if the release time is too slow, the gain reduction of the loud parts of the program will continue into the softer sections, which may become difficult to hear.make it difficult to hear.

Like Attack, memory 7 is the fastest attack.

press all

2023 08 30 04x43 04

Engineers typically use “All Button” mode for drums, ambience and room mics.I also use it to “dirty” bass and guitar sounds, and “in your face” on vocals. In All-Button mode (aka “British Mode”), the initial transient attack has a time lag, resulting in a sharp increase in distortion. In All Buttons mode, the ratio is between 12:1 and 20:1, and as the bias point changes throughout the circuit, so will the attack and release times.A unique, ever-changing compression curve creates a trademark overdrive tone that can only be found in this limiter/compressor series.

The operation is Shift Multiple buttons can be turned ON/OFF by clicking while pressing the key.

Side chain

2023 08 30 04h44 57 1

The Compressor sidechain features a custom linear filter with a fixed 10dB/10dB (3dB/octave).This feature minimizes the low frequency content from the compressor's control sidechain, preventing excessive gain reduction or "pumping" of bass-rich audio signals without reducing the low frequency content of the audio signal itself. To toggle this feature, click the “/” filter symbol or “RELEASE” text label below the Release knob, or shift-click anywhere on the Release knob. When the sidechain filter is activated, the Release knob is “lifted” and slightly louder.

It's a little hard to understand, but when you click the word "Release", it feels like the knob has been lifted.

You can adjust the side chain filter with this knob floating.

Triple threat

The 1176 Classic Limiter Plug-In Collection offers three different 1176 revisions, representing over 40 years of design iterations of the original 3. The Rev A “Bluestripe” represents the original Putnam FET limiter design with higher distortion and unique FET gain amplifier characteristics. Rev E “Blackface” covers the Brad Plunkett “LN” (Low Noise) era of the early 1176s, with variations such as a more linear compression response, transistor gain amplification, and program dependent changes. The 70AE is UA's rare 1176 1176th Anniversary Edition with unique modifications including a lower 40:2 compression ratio.

Fast classic compression

Using the 1176 is simple. Input sets the compression threshold and level of the signal entering the 1176 simultaneously, Output sets the final signal level. Attack sets how long it takes for the 1176 to react to the incoming signal, and Release sets how long it takes for the 1176 to return to its initial level. A VU meter displays the amount of gain reduction (GR) or output level (+4/+8).

Ratio button icon color

The four Ratio buttons determine the amount of gain reduction – low ratios are compression, high ratios are limiters.Turning all ratio buttons off disables compression and keeps the signal running through the 4's circuitry, adding unmistakable color.By user request, the plugin now allows hardware-enabled “Multi-Button” combinations, including the famous “All Button” sound.
