Introducing Samplebrain, a sample mash app designed by AphexTwin

Today is not a plugin, but a sample mash app designed by AphexTwin.

Please note that it is completely different from the mashup (combining two or more songs to create one song) that you often hear.

And this app is not a product that can be recommended to everyone.

I think that the name of AphexTwin is popular and the actual information is not properly conveyed.

I prepared a video, so please check it out.
(I think most people would be disappointed)

The app itself is 6 years old, and it may have been cutting-edge back then, but now I think that similar effects can be achieved with granular plug-ins.

Those who have been DTM for a long timeKVR Developer Challenge 2016If you look at it, you may be able to remember most of the time.

It was a time when many GUIs were still simple.

Sound demo

To be honest, it's hard to use and it's hard to understand the effect of the parameters.

The CPU load is quite high, and processing runs in non-real time when parameters such as numbers are changed.
(no sound during that time)

I tried playing the demo brain that can be downloaded officially.

I loaded a sample and played it.

It's very heavy and I wonder if it's working properly.

Overview

Custom sample mash app designed by Aphex Twin.

Samplebrain chops the sample into a 'brain' of small interconnected sections called blocks, which are connected by analogy into a network. This app cuts the target sample into blocks in the same way, matches each block with the block in the brain, and tries to play it in real time.

This allows us to interpret one sound in terms of another. 2015-2016), as we worked, we gradually added more and more tweakable parameters to the point where it got a little out of control.

quick start

  1. load a lot of samples into the brain
  2. Click (re)generate on the brain.
  3. load the loop sample into the target
  4. click the target
  5. press the play button
  6. adjust the brain

The default block size (3000) is very large to prevent CPU glitches.
A range of 500 to 1000 is good.

Download

You can download it without registration.

Go to the above link and click "you can download the application on our gitlab page here".

There is an OS download link in "Binariies", so click the appropriate link.

Let's download the demo together. (It's not required, but it will make a sound anyway.)

the abovelinksYou can download it by clicking "Demo brain session" on the same page.

Installation

In the case of Win, installation is unnecessary, and when you unzip it, "samplebrain.exe" is included, so just run it.

How to play the demo brain

If you downloaded "Demo brain session" earlier, load "demo.samplebrain" downloaded from "Load session".

I think I'm starting to get used to this.

Then change the parameters appropriately.

If you change any settings other than the sliders, you'll need to run "(re)generate brain".

Summary

When AphexTwin's name comes up, I have high hopes, but my honest opinion is that I wouldn't use it.

It may be that I just can't use it at all, but the high CPU load and the inconvenient GUI discourage me from using it.

Now there are granular apps with better operability, so I'll try to write an introductory article on that side.
