Thorough explanation of two types of FL Studio side chain setting methods

This is yosi from Chillout with Beats.

In FL StudioFruity LimiterI investigated other side chain setting methods, but I could think and verify it myself without it, so I will publish it. ((This is probably the only site in Japan that has written so far.

I think that the person who was doing it was doing it, but I think that there was no one who wrote the article.

2019-09-02 Addendum

-Added a method that combines Delay and sidechain effect as an application.
Using this method, you can make the delay sound quieter when the vocal is singing, and louder when not singing.

About the effect of side chain

First, about the effect of the side chain.

The article is helpful as Ableton's tutorials are explained step by step from a historical background.

In this article, the variations are explained firmly about the side chain with sound, which is very helpful.

If you listen to the effect, it is easy to understand the effect of the side chain if it is the filter house music that appears in the above article. (You can hear the finest and Kick firmly and it is sharp)

4 ways to get a sidechain effect in FL Studio

Since it is a thorough explanation, I will explain two types of setting methods firmly.

However, there are four ways to get the side chain effect in FL Studio.
(Two well-known species are excluded from this commentary)

1.Fruity peak controller (not covered by this article)

I often see it on the net by using the Fruity peak controller.

However, since there is almost no sense of unity peculiar to the side chain, the situations where it is used are limited.

If you do it with a fader, it is inconvenient when you want to change the overall volume a little, so it is better to use Fruity Balance etc.

-No complicated routing is required, and the fader moves so it is easy to see and understand.
・ The range and timing of volume reduction can be fine-tuned with the Fruity peak controller.
・ In the case of Loop material, it is necessary to separate only the kick by EQ etc., so use multiple Mixers
・ Lack of unity between side-chaining trigger and source

2. Routed by Fruity Limiter and Mixer (not covered by this article)

This pattern is the most common sidechain search article in FL Studio.

Fruity LimiterIs a case of using as a side chain comp.

・ A sense of unity between the trigger and the source that are side-chained
・ Easy to do without any special settings
In the case of Loop material, it is necessary to separate only the kick by EQ etc., so use multiple Mixers

3. Sidechain compatible comps and limiters and Mixer routing

I searched for a sidechain method with a 3rd party comp, but I couldn't find it at all, so I wrote an article.

First, there are advantages and disadvantages.

・ Comp and Limiter other than Fruity Limitter can be used.
・ In the case of DrumLoop material, it is necessary to separate only the kick by EQ etc., so use multiple Mixers

AlmostFruity LimiterSince it is the same as the method of using, I will explain it briefly.

I took a video.

The comp uses Native Instruments Solid Dynamics, but if you have a comp or limiter that supports side chains, you can follow the same procedure.

I will explain briefly.

Bass is in Mixer1 and Kick is in Mixer2.

2019 07 19 15x13 12

Insert the comp and limiter corresponding to the side chain into Mixer1.

Route from Mixer2 to Mixer1.
(Click the red frame below to route)

2019 07 19 15x11 51

At this time, it is also possible to select whether to use the sound to be routed by right-clicking only in the side chain or to mix it with the mixer.2019 07 27 17x42 13

Please note that you will not be able to proceed to the following steps without routing first.

Open the inserted comp and click from the gear icon at the top of the screen in order as shown below.
If you drag it up with ④, the number will be displayed.

This will give you a routed number.
(If you are routing multiple times, it will be displayed in addition to 1.)

Now that you're ready, let's change the comp settings.

For the time being, paste the settings that are quite effective.

4. Route using sidechain compatible comps, limiters and patches

I came up with this method when I was thinking about using Patcher.

Since the degree of freedom is not perfect, it is effective when using the loop material as the source of the side chain.
(Because you can extract only the bass drum part with EQ and side chain)

・ One Mixer is enough
・ Easy to understand the routing visually
・ The degree of freedom is incomplete
・ If you do not understand Patcher, MIDI, etc., you may not be able to handle it well.

Patcher will explain in a little more detail with videos.

First, follow the steps below.

-Insert "Patcher" into "Mixer1" and add "SliceX" in "Patcher".
-Load the drum loop into "Slice X". (Can be read by dragging)

Next, we will add compressors that support side chains.

Here we use the Supercharger included in Native Instruments' free Komplete Start.

-Add a comp "Supercharger" that supports side chains to Patcher.
-Add AudioIn to "Supercharger"
-Add "Event Out" to "From FL Studio"
-Connect "Event Out" and "MIDI IN" of "Slice X"

2019 07 19 18x18 33

Add EQ and connect.
I'm using "Fruty Parametric EQ 2" here, but since it only cuts high, there is no problem with any EQ.

・ Addition of "Fruty Parametric EQ 2"
・ Connection of "From FL Stduio" and "Supercharger" (connect to Input above)
・ Connection of "Slice X", "Fruty Parametric EQ 2" and "Supercharger"
・ Connection of "Slice X" and "To FL Studio"

2019 07 19 18x39 19

Next, set the EQ and comp.

-Assign Input 2 to "Connection 1" from the "Supercharger" gear icon.
-Turn on "Sidechain" of "Supercharger" and set the value of "Compress" to around 12 o'clock.
・ Cut high with "Fruty Parametric EQ 2"

2019 07 19 18x50 21

We will set up Midi.

-Add "Midi Out"
-Copy the Midi data when loading the sample into "Slice X" of "Patcher" to Midi Out.
・ Check if there is a sound

・ Load the sample you want to sidechain
-Select "Mixer 1" in which "Patcher" is inserted as the output destination of the mixer.

When I tried to make a sound, the effect of the side chain was weak, so I further reduced the high with EQ.
I added another sample and added it to "Mixer 1".

This video is a sidechain with Waves H-Comp.

If you move the analog knob, the sound will change considerably.
(Major treble is cut off by MP4 conversion and it is difficult to understand the difference, so please try various things.)

Extra edition Side chain effect and Delay are used in combination (additional note)

This is the effect of the demo wrap made in the following article.

Those who are looking for a shakuhachi sound source are on sale, so please read the following articles as well.

It can be done with a free plug-in, so I made it for explanation separately.

The plug-ins used are as follows.

・ FL standard patcher
・ FL standard Fruity Deleay 3
・ NI Super Charger (free version)

NI's SuperCharger comes with Komplete Start. Please refer to the following articles for installation etc.

Setup steps

The method is the same as the method using "Patcher", so I will omit the details.

Divide the input into two, one for the sidechain and one for delaying.

2019 09 02 11x57 34

Listen to the difference in the effect of the side chain.

All samples for this song are from Loopcloud's free samples.

It's free and quite usable, so if you don't have it, you should download it.

Thorough explanation summary of 2 types of FL Studio side chain setting method

Summarize.

・ There are four ways to get the sidechain effect in FL Studio (two are not well known)
・ One of the two is the method of routing the mixer.
・ The other is how to use Patcher
・ When using Patcher, you may be addicted if you do not understand the flow of MIDI signals.
・ The character of the side chain changes depending on the comp

If you are a FL Studio user and only used the Fruity Limiter for the sidechain, please try using other comps and limiters.

I have different fun, so please come.

    4. Route using sidechain compatible compressors, limiters and patchers.I tried that.
If you don't understand Patcher or MIDI, you may not be able to handle it well.
I was wondering what to do with DrumLoop, so yosi's explanation was very helpful.
I am grateful that this site is probably the only site in Japan that has written so far.

      thank you for your comment.
      I'm glad it went well.
I don't know if it's a coincidence, but I was just reviewing this article on the day I received your post, and I was surprised to receive your comment just as I wanted to make it a little easier to understand.

I am grateful that this site is probably the only site in Japan that has written so far.

      As long as it's embarrassing.
When I read it again, I found parts that were difficult to understand, and I thought it would be difficult to look at it objectively.
